Just like there are great things you can do when hiring a REALTOR®, there are also many bad things you can do as well. Here are the 5 worst:
Trusting your friends or coworkers implicitly when they tell you they know who the best agent the world has ever seen is! And, they live right in your home town!
Chances are, your life experiences are different and so too will your needs (some private that you may not want your coworkers knowing). Moreover, you simply don’t know what criteria they have used to come to their conclusion. People mean the best, but do your homework. For all you know, that agent pays people $1000 for referrals and they may not even be good at their jobs.
Choosing a REALTOR® simply be
cause you love the person who made the recommendation.
Similar story to the above point – but, if dear old Dad or the sweetest boyfriend you ever had recommended a REALTOR® it may be hard to say no. Loved ones often do not suggest the right REALTOR® that is suited for us, but because we are close to them it is difficult to say no.
We fail to think with our heads when we are with them. Thus, it is better to refer to RealAgents.ca who puts you in touch with great referral agencies that will not be biased in who they recommend. This saves time and energy on both sides – and maybe relationships.
What if the REALTOR® turns out to be
a dud and you suffer personal, financial or legal losses/setbacks. Imagine how awkward seeing your family members will be if you buy a house filled with mold because your REALTOR® told you not to get an inspection!
Not meeting your new REALTOR® in person!
With technology these days, it isn’t unheard of that agents are hired without actually meeting. It is important that you meet the REALTOR® at least once before you assign him the task of putting your house on the market or finding your dream home.
There are a lot of factors and pieces of information you can pick up by meeting them in person. Imagine showing up and discovering an unshaven, smelly, stained dress shirt wearing ‘professional’? You don’t want them representing you or your home! While that example is a little extreme, you’d be surprised of the stories we’ve heard.
Hiring the first REALTOR® that comes up on Google!
Simply put, whoever pays the most will show up first. Google does not look into whether or not a REALTOR® has high or low regard for ethics/integrity when it sells ads. Just because an agent showed up first, does not mean they are the top agent in your community. Only after interviewing, researching their backgrounds and asking the right questions can you determine if they are a quality agent or not.
Going it alone while you look for a new REALTOR®.
If there was a free REALTOR® finding service, with no obligations to use the recommended REALTOR®, who found local agents known for excellence, attentiveness and integrity, wouldn’t it be a good decision to use them? We are being facetious, but we truly believe in our product.
Why not let the experts handpick your top local REALTOR®?
