Before you move into a new home there are a number of tasks you should complete. These tasks will make the moving experience a pleasure and will help you avoid nasty surprises after you’ve occupied the home.Moving into a new home is an exciting time, and you’re probably daydreaming about decor and paint schemes and new furniture. But before you get into the fun stuff, there are some basics you should cover first.
Change the Locks
Before you start moving your furniture and belongings in call a locksmith and change the locks. If you’re comfortable doing it yourself than you can go this route. Even if you’ve been promised that the locks have been changed it doesn’t cost much to change the locks and it gives you additional peace of mind that no-one else has keys to your home.
Call an Exterminator
Another priority task is to get the exterminator in to get rid of any “unwanted guests” if you see any evidence they may be there. Even if the place looks clean, it is important to do a careful inspection. The best time to get rid of any problems of this sort is when the house is empty. This way you can ensure none of your belongings are infested. If you suspect there could be a problem, but are not sure, most exterminators will do a free inspection for you.
Steam Clean the Carpets
The previous owners may have had pets, young children, or just some plain old clumsiness. Take the time to steam clean the carpets so that your floors are free of stains and allergens. It’s pretty easy and affordable to rent a steam cleaner—your local grocery store may have them available.
Clean Out the Kitchen
If the previous occupants wanted to skip on some of their cleaning duties when they moved out, the kitchen is where they probably cut corners. Wipe down the inside of cabinets, clean out the refrigerator, clean the oven, and clean in the nooks and crannies underneath the appliances.
You’re probably very excited to move into your new place, however, this list of to do’s should not be overlooked if you want the move to be pleasant. All these duties can be completed in a day so you won’t have to postpone your move for too long. If you’re too busy packing your stuff or getting other things prepared consider getting cleaners in to help.
